Be Kind, Brendan Fraser Exhorts! The Scorpion King VFX team warned him about the terrible "Mummy Returns" CGI, saying, "We Needed More Time."
Brendan Fraser doesn't need to be informed about the poor visual effects utilised in "The Mummy Returns" to bring Dwayne Johnson's Scorpion King to life. When Fraser had to talk about the 2001 follow-up during a career retrospective interview with GQ magazine, he didn't waste any time bringing up the criticised CGI. The actor claimed that even the movie's VFX artists advised Fraser on the world premiere red carpet of "The Mummy Returns" that the Scorpion King CGI was terrible.
Fraser recalled, "Dwayne was a piece of tape on a stick that we referred to, so I never met him until after the premiere. "Of course they eventually added CGI to him. I am aware that. Be considerate! I ran with the CGI artists on the Scorpion King at the premiere, and they asked me how I was doing. We created the CGI for Scorpion King. Yes, a little extra time was required. It happened at the last minute.
It could be restored, I suppose, but it wouldn't be as entertaining if Dwayne, the janky video game character, wasn't present, Fraser continued. "The way it functions is strangely absolutely wonderful."
After the popularity of the 1999 original, Fraser compared returning to "The Mummy" franchise for the sequel to "going back to another semester of college." saying, "Hey, guys! What happened to your summer? It was fantastic to return to Morocco and see everyone. That's my favourite camel dude, it was like.
Fraser described "The Mummy Returns" as "more of the same." People requested more, so we obliged by providing more of the same. We overdid it by giving them. Fortunately for us, they replied!
Although Fraser and Dwayne Johnson didn't meet until after the release of "The Mummy Returns," their affection for one another has remained constant over the years. One of the first famous people to respond to the viral Venice Film Festival footage showing Fraser overtaken with emotion during the screening of his new movie "The Whale" was Johnson.
Johnson posted on Twitter, "Man this makes me so glad to see this lovely ovation for Brendan." He encouraged me to take my first job in his 'Mummy Returns' franchise, which launched my Hollywood career. I'm rooting for your success, brother, and I'm happy for my friend and fellow filmmaker, Darren Aronofsky.
The "Journey to the Center of the Earth" film series from Warner Bros. offers another Hollywood link between Johnson and Fraser. The star of the 2012 sequel, "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island," replaced Fraser, who starred in the 2008 original.
On December 9, A24 will open theatres with Fraser's "The Whale." View the video below to see a retrospective of his GQ career.
